The area between Ullapool in the south and Cape Wrath in the north is truly remote. There are few habitations and few roads making this a great area to explore. Whilst not wild like the Cairngorms, nor craggy like the western highlands, the area is a remote wilderness, enhancing outdoor activities.

There are 4 big hills in the area (Munros) but these are not the jewels in the area. The 7 jewels of Assynt take this accolade. The hills here just grow out from the sea with many interesting and distinctive shapes. Hills such as Stac Pollaidh and Suilven are unlike anything else in the UK and stand out when viewed from other summits, or indeed from the sea. This is the land for the true hillwalker.

The sea here is clear, not the grey of the North Sea but blue clear water. The area is the sea kayaker's paradise. Whilst the headlands can be exciting, paddling around the bays and inlets can be of equal quality. One area of especial interest are the Summer Isles. These are within easy reach of the coast and are relatively sheltered. On a summer day this is one of the best sea kayaking areas in Scotland if not the world. However don't be fooled; sometimes the sea can be rough when going out could be foolhardy.
